November 2018 In recent weeks there have been multiple confirmed cases of leptospirosis in Dutchess County. While most of theses cases have been in Southern Dutchess, we have reports of cases in Northern Dutchess also. This is not a common disease in our area, but it can be fatal if left untreated and the treatment can be costly. Lepto infection can lead to kidney and or liver failure. Pets can be infected from drinking an infected water source (ponds, puddles etc). There is a very effective vaccine that is available. It is a two part series (similar to the Lyme disease vaccine). This is to inform our clients only. If you have questions concerning your pet's exposure or protection, please contact our office.
